Aikido Bakka Wha??

No, it's not a line from Chewbacca. This is a style of martial arts taught with MOVFItness. It's called Aikido Bokken Kata. In lamen terms - Choreographed Sword Fighting. Let's break it down:

Aikido

Translated as "the way of unifying life energy". Aikido concentrates on teaching flexibility, controlled strength while relaxing the mind and body, and endurance. The body is in tune as if in dance while performing beautiful movements. This is an art, not a applicable defense strategy.

Bokken

The bokken refers to the wooden sword used for practicing different moves. We use custom-made Bokken swords not found anywhere else. When combining the two words Aikido + Bokken you can see that this is a martial art welding a sword. They are hand-made in the Applachia by Matt's grandfather. Each bokken is weighted to fit the hands of a female as most bokkens are designed for males. In real combat, a metal sword known as the katana is used. Our swords are safe and have blunt ends to them.

Kata

In Japanese, Kata means form. This is used in Japanese martial arts to described choreographed moves or formations. When combining all 3 words, Aikido Bokken Kata you see that we teach Choreographed Martial Art Sword Fighting.

We offer ABK in our private training and newly added to our bootcamps. This is a great workout and some people practice it solely. With all things at MOVFitness, we believe in moderation. We offer one complimentary session in ABK if you are interested.

The Entire ABK workout lasts about 30 minutes and is a favorite by our clients. This includes 2 minutes of choreography followed by 1 minute of rest. The actual workout phase is only 16 minutes long. You would be amazed how much of a workout you can get in 16 minutes!

Do women train in Aikido?

Yes, and they are often quite good at it. Aikido succeeds not because of muscular strength or power, but with position, timing, blending and grace. As many men have learned to use their size and strength in moments of challenge, while women usually do not have this ingrained learning, aikido is particularly suited for women.
